New Works: Ron Gorchov

Overview

" By removing sharp angles, the curvature of the stretcher alters the perception of the work,..."

MARUANI MERCIER & HADIDA is pleased to announce the solo exhibition of the American painter Ron Gorchov.

On this occasion, the artist will show his latest works. Since the end of the 60s, Ron Gorchov has been reflecting on pictorial space and its support, which led him to work on both convex and concave frames from 1966 onwards.

By removing sharp angles, the curvature of the stretcher alters the perception of the work, escaping the traditional format of the rectangle or square. Gorchov declines using a simple and organic forms of vocabulary infavour of playing with contrasting solid colors. Although he works under a strict procedure and protocol, Gorchov's sense of color and subtle variations of forms and compositions allow him to create a simple form of poetry.

Gorchov's work links American abstraction, including Abstract Expressionism, of which he is one of the last representatives. His "stack paintings" evoke Minimalism, especially works of Donald Judd, and French artists of Supports / Surfaces such as Claude Viallat, in particular.

Ron Gorchov's works are in the largest private and public collections, including the United States at the Solomon R.Guggenheim Museum, New York; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; and MOMA, New York.
