Residence at Akademie Schloss Solitude 2019-2020

Manuel Mathieu will be artist in residence at Akademie Schloss Solitude in Germany from 1 July 2019 until 31 January 2020. He was chosen by Catherine David, curator of the National Gallery Jeu de Paume in Paris.

Manuel Mathieu was born in 1986, the year of the Haitian uprising that marked the end of the Duvalier era. He was named after the novel Gouverneurs de la rosée (Master of the Dew) a Classic of Haitian Literature. Manuel Mathieu is known as an interdisciplinary artist, but is always drawn back to his paintbrushes. In 2012, the Marina Abramovic Insitute (MAI) published a monograph, Abysse (Abyss), on his work summarizing his painting practice. His recent solo show was at the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA), London/Great Britain.

Fatos Üstek – curator of the 2015 revival of fig-2 and assistant curator of the 10th Gwangju Biennial – selected Manuel Mathieu from a pool of over 230 applicants to be featured at the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) in the penultimate week of the fig-2 program, marking him as an artist poised for success mid-way through his studies. In 2016, he obtained his Master in fine arts at Goldsmiths University of London.

Manuel Mathieu's work has also been shown in several museums like Museum of the Americas in Doral, FL/USA, the Museum of Civilization in Quebec/Canada and more recently at the Grand Palais in Paris/France.
