Stefan Brüggemann’s Hyper-Palimpsest series are immersive works with spraypainted headlines of political and cultural history. These are overlaid with the artist’s timeless and iconic text statements. The title refers to a ‘palimpsest', an old text or document in which writing has been removed and covered or replaced by new writing. It relates to the physical process of creating the series, itself a performative act, and the conceptual impact of layering of text. First installed as a wall-to-wall site-specific installation, the works are now shown alone or in groups of two and three, thus reflecting the evolution of a palimpsest as an repurposed object. The works exhibited at the gallery are accompanied by audio recordings by one of Brüggeman's heroes, Iggy Pop, reading the artist’s entire catalogue of text statements that span back to the late 1990s.
