Small in scale, Jeune fille au cerceau et montre molle, is an impressively detailed and captivating drawing from a critical point in his career. The melting clock in the foreground is one the artist’s most iconic and recognizable motifs. Seen most famously in his much-celebrated painting, The Persistence of Memory. Yet this clock is unique to others, as it holds thirteen hours instead of 12, an element not found in other depictions. Dalí often recounted that the inspiration for his melting clocks came from an oozing camembert cheese that had been left out in the sun. But for Dalí, clocks also represent the ominous presence of time and serve as looming reminders of our mortality. In the background, set amongst the barren landscape of his beloved Cadaqués, a girl is depicted alone playing with a hoop. The image is a symbolic reference to the loneliness and isolation that Dalí had experienced in his own childhood.
