A major work of the artist’s Dada period, this work represents a visionary comment on the modern world likely inspired by the Woolworth building, one of the first skyscrapers of New York built in 1913. The original sculpture created in 1917 was lost, thus Man Ray reconstructed the sculpture in 1966. On this work he wrote: “New York gives you the middle finger that will no doubt tickle the susceptibility of French artists. Hopefully this tickle will once again mark the already famous wound that characterises the closed somnolence of art. Man Ray’s works are made of mace basil with a pinch of mignonette and parsley into the hard-core soul.”

There are two editions in existence:
- An edition of 9 in nickel-plated and painted bronze
- An edition of 3 in solid silver
