In Stop the Train the subject is holding a white flag, symbol of peace, of surrendering. Here several interpretations are possible. The white flag could be seen as a demand to stop the pain his brother was feeling when he was still alive but at the same time it is also the artist asking for his own pain to stop. The painting is as if on fire. These flames are on the one hand representative for this pain but also in some ways they embody this endless battle against the illness his brother was suffering from and that he wished to end. The red and yellow in the background could also be interpreted as hell because the artist blamed himself for his prayers that somehow were misinterpreted.
