Louise Bourgeois’s work touches on one of her most enduring and tender themes: motherhood. In this piece, she captures the physical and emotional transformation of pregnancy, an experience she revisits not through the lens of youth, but through the body and psyche of an older woman. What emerges is a poignant reflection on creation, vulnerability, and the cyclical nature of life. The work embodies a duality: both an homage to the generative power of femininity and an expression of Bourgeois’s own frailty in later life, where the beauty of maternity is refracted through memory, age, and introspection.
