In The Fountain, a figure ascends the composition amid spouting strokes and fragments of surrounding figures. Framed by two columns of stacked bones, Ededéen’s painting extends into the sculptural medium, perhaps in dialogue with the references to Sculpture magazine that he ‘received’ for this work. Superimposing distinct outlines, and scraping away fragments of pigment, the artist pursues a kind of excavation. Unearthing unexpected meanings, associations and chance encounters, the painting powerfully considers the mysterious boundary of the Jungian collective unconscious.
