There is a clear link between this work, the first to be completed, and The Natural State of Most Living Things. It delves into the complex state of simply existing, of trying to hold multiple truths at once. Samuel de Saboia embraces the paradox: that even though it may be impossible to fully contain or reconcile everything, there is still beauty and therefore, harmony in the attempt.
It challenges different elements to coexist various faces, beings, and forms all vying for presence and recognition. Each figure seeks the viewer’s attention, but in doing so simultaneously creates a kind of harmony, one that is self-reflective, inward, and driven by the imagination.
This harmony is not peaceful in a conventional sense. It resembles the inner mechanics of the mind, the gears turning when a decision is made, when a plan begins to form, when desire fuels action. It is about commitment: the moment when one decides to invest fully, to push forward, even to the point of overextension. There is a tension between control and surrender, yet the desire to continue outweighs the temptation to stop.
At its core, this work channels a drive toward expansion, in creativity, desire, and emotion. It also signals an embrace of boldness: boldness that doesn’t need to tamed. It is an unapologetic statement of forward movement.
