In Biolumen (2000), Philip Taaffe transforms the canvas into a dense field of radiating forms. Concentric, wheel-like motifs line the edges of the composition, while a larger burst of white and black rays dominates its centre, creating a powerful sense of expansion and optical vibration. Set against a richly layered ground of green, red and orange, these repeated structures evoke at once botanical forms, microscopic organisms and celestial diagrams. Characteristic of Taaffe’s practice, Biolumen draws on symbolic vocabularies without fixing them to a single source, allowing the work to hover between abstraction and the spiritual or cosmological. As the artist notes, “Essentially, I'm trying to make a primitive painting. I'm trying to summon the archaic. I want to enter into a primitive situation. This is my protest against the sensory deprivation that we experience, which is due to this tendency towards globalization, towards homogenization, towards the generic: a technical standard rather than an aesthetic standard”.
