Shortly after starting work on the urban plan for the city of Chandigarh in India in 1951, Le Corbusier planned to install an agora in the heart of the most prestigious buildings in the administrative district. He calls it "Pit of Consideration" and wants to top it with an immense sculpture representing an open hand, enamelled in the colors of India. The " Main ouverte " is for Le Corbusier the symbol of dialogue and the transfer of knowledge between generations. As such, it is one of its strongest symbols. From 1954 until the end of his life in 1965, Le Corbusier looked for ways to finance the production of this colossal work. It will not be installed on the site until more than twenty years after its death.
