Justin Brice Guariglia works with an aerospace contractor in the mid-western USA to make a custom designed aluminum honeycomb panel, the same material used in airplanes and ballistic missiles. Once the panel arrives in his studio, he stretches Belgian linen over the surface, then he proceed to apply 20 lays of white acrylic gesso onto there surface until the surface texture of the linen cannot be seen. This requires sanding often between the layers, a long, laborious process that is all done by hand with machines inside his studio. To get to a perfect panel requires around 3-4 months. Once the surface is flat, using a UV acrylic printer, Justin applies an image which he has taken, onto the surface of the gesso. On top of the image, he hand paint a platinum gold acrylic paint, then sand the paint and image back. Then he reprints the same image, and repaint the surface, then sand the surface down again. Every time the sanding produces a different, somewhat random result.
