The source photo documents a “Doers” luncheon hosted by Ladybird Johnson
made up of women citizen leaders gathered at the White House to discuss crime prevention on
January 18 1968. One guest, Eartha Kitt, spoke up against the Vietnam War in a tense back and
forth with the President and First Lady which resulted in Kitt being blackballed in the US for
many years. I was drawn to the body language of the figures here as well as the composition of
the group/audience in the space. Eartha was invited back to the Carter White House in 1978.
President Carter greeted her: “Welcome home, Eartha.”
