The painting “Mr. Joachim” portrays a black gentleman dressed in early Victorian fashion clothing in the 1900’s. The picture referenced comes from an archive of black gentlemen in the Gilded Age fashions in the United State of America’s history of the late 19th century. The early stage of the Gilded Age coincided with portions of the Victorian era in Britain and Belle Époque in France. Through cultural hegemony, fashion styles were spread across continents, including America. The rockin’ of the frock coat with a vest, cravats and wide-brimmed hats was one of the styles, and men of different colors styled in it, including Black Americans, who we don't most in history books. The painting takes this obscured history and explicitly reveals it with new touches of West African textile fabric. The wide-brimmed hat, vest and some parts of the background are done in fabric collage. The painting is named Mr. Joachim, after a friend’s father, who likes this fashion style. And it’s a subtle gesture to give identity to this black American gentleman of the mid-1800s.
