He attended Phoenix College and earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the California Institute for the Arts in 1972. While living in Chicago, Fischl worked as a guard at the Museum of Contemporary Art before moving to Halifax to teach painting at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. In 1975, he had his first solo show and returned to New York City a few years later. A keen observer of the relationships between people, and between people and their surroundings, Fischl made his reputation in the 1980s with large-scale figurative oil paintings depicting ambiguous, erotically charged scenarios set in the American suburbs. Among his public works are the statue Soul in Flight: Memorial to Arthur Ashe and the wallpainting at Penn Station in New York, The Garden of Circus Delights . Fischl is an internationally acclaimed, both as a painter and a sculptor. He has been featured in over one thousand publications and his artwork is represented in many distinguished museums, including the the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; the Museum of Modern Art, New York and the Centre Pompidou, Paris. He is a Fellow at both the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the American Academy of Arts and Science.Fischl lives and works in Sag Harbor, NY with his wife, the painter April Gornik.
