The title refers to Philip José Farmer’s “Night of Light”, a science fiction novel
published in 1957. Hendrix said the idea for “Purple Haze” came to him in a dream after reading
the book which describes a planet orbiting a distant sun inundated in a mysterious radiation
that alters the perception of reality. At one point in the story, the sunspots visible from an alien
planet are described as having a "purplish haze” which was said to inspire the song of the same
name. The source image depicts Hendrix performing in 1967 in Stockholm.
