This “Smile” sign led to the title of an additional
painting of Brian Wilson in his music studio. His stance and robe brought to mind Sargent’s Dr.
Pozzi, Gainsborough’s Blue Boy and countless images of prophets, surfboard in hand. I’ve
painted images of Brian Wilson as early as 2007 being drawn to his reputation as a fraught
“genius” figure and an American California icon.
